Attaining a family immigrant visa

As an immigrant wanting to enter the United States, it is likely that you want to do so with your family, and therefore, you will want to apply for a family-based visa.

Finding the right visa for your specific purposes can be confusing. Under the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) there are a number of options available, however.

Immediate Relative Immigrant Visas

If you are a United States citizen or if you have an immediate family member who is a United States citizen, then a good choice for you may be to apply for the Immediate Relative Immigrant Visa. There are options for spouses, unmarried children under the age of 21, adopted orphan children both in the United States and abroad and parents of United States citizens. Fortunately, there is no annual limit to the amount of this type of visa that can be issued each year.

Family Preference Immigrant Visas

If you would like to apply for a visa along with a more distant family member, then it can be possible to do this through the Family Preference Immigrant Visas. This is available for United States citizens' unmarried and married children of any age and any children that they may have, their brothers and sisters and their spouses along with their minor children.
