Push for immigration law changes put on temporary hold

We've heard a lot of talk about proposed changes to immigration laws in recent years -- and especially over the last few days. It appeared that certain politicians in Congress were going to push forward with their agenda to make immigration rules stricter. However, last Thursday lawmakers left Washington to have a week-long recess and the push for immigration reform was put on a temporary hold.

Prominent Democrats and Republicans are hoping to negotiate toward some kind of agreement during the recess period. So far, a proposed immigration reform measure has 213 out of the 218 signatures it requires to move forward with a vote next month. That means only five more lawmakers need to be swayed for the immigration reform bill to move forward.

The proposed legislation covers many different areas of immigration law, such as funding to police U.S. borders and the way people become citizens. At this time, news reports say that lawmakers have reached a sticking point when it comes to Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or "Dreamers," who usually came into the United States as the minor children of undocumented immigrants. Some politicians, for example, want to offer an easy pathway for Dreamers to receive green cards and eventually citizenship. Other lawmakers disagree with this solution.

Regardless how you feel about the issue of immigration law reform, it's important to watch how this issue progresses through Congress if you're currently an immigrant hoping to receive permanent residency or citizenship in the United States. If the law changes, it could either help or hinder your immigration goals.
