The number of H-1B work visas issued is steadily declining

A report released this week shows that at least 25% or more of H-1B employment visa applications were denied between Oct. 2018 and June 2019. This marks a significant increase over the H-1B denial rate during the 2015 fiscal year. Indian nationals, many of which occupy highly-specialized roles at some of the United States’ leading tech companies are finding that their job prospects have been greatly diminished because of this.

Some of the biggest tech companies in the country that rely on foreign-born workers to fill their positions. Historically, 70% of the H1-B work visa recipients have been Indians. The number of Indian permit holders has declined significantly since Donald Trump came into office though.

Researchers with the National Foundation for American Policy (NFAP) have found that new guidelines for approving or denying H-1B petitions have gone into effect since Trump came into office. The NFAP argues that many of the standards that the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) now uses have been implemented without first being passed into law by Congress.

The highest rate of H-1B work visa denials has occurred in the technology sector. Tech companies such as Cognizant has had 60% of its workers’ permit applications denied. Infosys, Accenture, Capgemini and Wipro are other tech companies that have faced similar fates.

Companies such as Amazon successfully secured 2,399 visas to bring workers here in 2018. Other industry giants such as Walmart, Cummings and Apple haven’t reported any decline in work permit approval rates.

NFAP data also shows that the number of work visa renewals has significantly declined since 2015 as well. Right now the denial rate hovers around 12%. It was 9% less in 2015.

Work visas requests have been subjected to increased scrutiny under the Trump administration. This means that there’s little to no room for making any errors in applying for such sponsorship to come here.
